Iron Roughnecks

Today’s drilling rigs are operating at significantly faster rates than ever before. The increase in drilling capacity is placing a high degree of stress on rig equipment and tool joints. Robust designs, ease of field maintenance, and troubleshooting, along with lower repair costs, are key decision factors when considering Iron Roughnecks.

One of the hardest, most dangerous jobs on the rig floor is the makeup and breakout of drillpipe and drill collars. Forum’s Iron Roughnecks tackle this job, all while keeping your crews and rigs safe. Even after completing a long trip, these durable units have plenty of torque left to connect and disconnect drilling bits.

Our Iron Roughnecks maximize pipe handling during the makeup and breakout of tubulars at wells center and mousehole locations. By enhancing pipe connection activities, they offer multiple configurations that adapt to numerous installations and pipe tasks. Hydraulic powered slewing motors provide superior reach and are anchored in a sturdy, pedestal mounted design.

FloorHand™

Forum’s FloorHand torque wrench and spinner tools offer the best value in the oil industry. Built upon the 50-year legacy of Blohm + Voss Oil Tools products, these workhorses complete fast, repetitive, and reliable operations. FloorHands use only minimal operational parts with no manual tong handling and reduced pipe slippage. As a result, your crew’s physical exposure is reduced while minimizing maintenance, improving performance, and enhancing drilling operations.

FR120 & FR120-C

With approximately 50 percent fewer components than others in its class, Forum’s FR120 and FR120-C series of iron roughnecks offer a unique, simplified design that provides years of reliable service. With the lowest cost of ownership in their class, our roughnecks are known for their low maintenance and easy repairs.

Both the FR120 and FR120-C models are hydraulically powered, lightweight and use high-torque spinning motors to spin up tubulars. Their design features three clamping cylinders that torque up and break out drillpipe and collars, limiting the potential for damaged, deformed tool joints while utilizing industry-standard four-inch dies. The FR120-C provides all of the features of the FR120 combined with a compact footprint for rig floors with limited space.

With a unique design that employs a simplified thread compensation system, these iron roughnecks allow for +/- five inches of spinner travel as the upper pipe section spins in and out. The compensation system ensures maximum spinner efficiency while enabling the most accurate torque application in its class. They also support the makeup and breakout of bits with an outer diameter up to 17.5 inches.

All of Forum’s iron roughnecks are designed in accordance with American Petroleum Institute (API) 7K specifications with minimum 2.25:1 design safety factors.
